Many thanked me for the blog, but I'm just glad that Tyler's story was out there and he became an inspiration to so many. Mostly, though, I'm thankful for all you prayer warriors that helped us get through this last year. We'll still be relying on you to pray for us as we mourn.

Please do not forget those that suffer so much with this loss, namely his mom, grandma Didi and Papa. They were closest to Tyler and are mourning deeply. Of course, that is not to take away from the pain his aunts/uncles, dad, cousins, friends and others are feeling as well. Please continue to pray for them and if you know them personally, reach out to them and let them know they are in your thoughts and prayers.
If you would like to make a donation directly to Michelle, the online fund is still active here: http://www.gofundme.com/1drbvk
Another opportunity to bless someone else, in Tyler's memory, would be to donate to the Ronald McDonald house in Ann Arbor. I know you can't read this from the picture, but his Aunt Tammy wrote his story for them and it is on their fundraising letter this winter. Our family stayed there over 315 days, which cost them over $23,000 in operating costs. But their cost to us was $0.00!!! Here is their website so you can see all of the ways you could help them: www.rmh-annarbor.org.
To finish the blog, I thought it most appropriate to share with you the heart felt words that were shared at his funeral service.

Tyler's aunt Patty wrote a letter that her cousin Dee Marie read so nicely. I don't have the exact words, but she always called Tyler her storm trooper. So, she told Tyler how he would always be her storm trooper. And although it was his dream to join the army and fight a war, God had a different battle for him. A battle where he could rest in his mom's arms, and strength, through the whole thing. She ended it with saying that now he's one of God's soldiers and we will miss him so much.

For the very few times that Tyler was on facebook, he recently posted this picture of a storm trooper that came to his room at UofM, with a caption that said: "This is for my aunt Patty".

His aunt Tammy read her letter that shared some character traits she thought about Tyler, before his illness. Things like shy, quiet, kind...and how those words instantly changed to things like warrior and fighter. But the most important trait his journey brought, was that he became a unifier. He brought our family together and so much closer than we could have ever imagined. His journey taught all of us so much. She went on to say the ways that she will miss him. How he was always willing to play with her kids and would "put up" with all of their annoying questions. She said she'll always cherish the memories of the "North House" where he was always around to take the kids for a golf cart ride or remove a fish from their hook. She laughed about how she wouldn't have anyone to water her plants anymore, because secretly he was her best water-er...and she appreciated how he cared for the things she cared for the most. She told a funny story of when Tyler caught her secretly crying while the National Anthem was playing while watching football. She said she'll never forget the face he made at her. She also mentioned how proud Rob was to be his uncle and how much they will miss their football talks and hanging out to watch the games. She ended by thanking him for how his journey taught her children courage and perseverance, something that as parents they could not have showed them, in such a powerful way.

I love Tammy's word "unifier" because that is one of the many things people mentioned at the viewing. That the strength and commitment our family had for each other was astounding. Dr. Murphy even told me that our family is "not normal". I laughed and said that we had been told that before. He said he meant it in a nice way...that in all his years, he had never seen a family come together like we did for Tyler.

Tyler's Aunt Cheri had her best friend/cousin Mary read a letter about what an honor it was to be his Godmother. And how she too will miss how kind he was and all of their football game nights and times at the north house. What stood out to me most in her letter, though, is how reassuring she was to Tyler that she would take care of his mom for him. This is something Tyler was worried about, even on his last day. She told him that she would protect her and make sure she was okay. She also told him that she knew he would be watching over his momma, up in heaven.
I’m Jettie and I was honored to have Tyler call me Aunt, even though I was technically his mom's cousin. If
you’ve been following his blog, you’ve probably noticed a few things by now…I’m
rarely at a loss for words, I cry quite a bit and I want to bring glory to God.
Today will be no exception.

There was so much that I wanted to tell you, like how he was
the first little boy to steal my heart (with his chubby cheeks, squeezable
thighs, bald head and little passies in his mouth all the time). Or how
Michelle and I took him to his first concert and he didn’t like it because of
the crowd. Or how he was always quiet and kind and never got in trouble. Or how
when he played football as a kid, the coach would try to get him to be
aggressive and mean out there on the field, but our sweet boy just didn’t have
it in him.

All of those things are really fond memories, but I wanted
to get to the meat of what this life is all about. There’s this Christian rap
song that has a line in it that says, “When life and death go to battle, aint
no telling what will happen.” I always think of Tyler when I hear that line.

Life and death went to battle over this boy this past year
and as we sit here in this room mourning Tyler, it may look to you like death
won, but I tell you, I believe life won this round. You see, it wasn’t just a
physical battle that Tyler endured, but also a spiritual battle.

On Oct 4th of last year, I received a devastating
call that Tyler had been taken to the ICU and they weren’t sure what was
happening. Shortly after I arrived, he was rushed into emergency surgery, and
our lives would never be the same. Many of you started following his story
after this post on the blog, I’m sure. This is the night we were told that
Tyler was “minute to minute” and probably wouldn’t make it through the night. I
can tell you that I’ve never pleaded with God more in my Christian walk than on
that night. Not just because I physically wanted Tyler here with us, but from
the Spiritual aspect, I had no idea if Tyler knew Jesus and I was broken. I
begged God to let him live so that we could share with him the path to
salvation. I was so upset with myself for taking this life for granted and not
taking every opportunity with my loved ones, to tell them about eternal life.

Thankfully, God answered that prayer. And not only did Tyler
live, much to everyone’s surprise, but he became a fighter, a warrior, even.
Throughout the last year, I took as many opportunities as I could to tell Tyler
about what Jesus had done for Him on the cross, taking his punishment for his
sin, so that He could be reconciled to the Father and have eternal life. I know
others did too. I’m so thankful that God is gracious enough to give us time
because He wants that none should perish but that all should come to repentance
and have eternal life.

A few weeks ago, when Tyler knew he was nearing the end, he
admitted to his mom and grandma that he thought he was losing this battle and
that he was scared. He asked for the doctors to talk him through what was going
to happen to his body and he asked if my pastor would come up again and talk to
him about what happens spiritually, when you die. Pastor Joe blessed us by
coming and talking to him the very next day and spent a lot of time with him,
telling him what it means to have faith in Jesus. Tyler had made a profession
of faith, in believing in what God did for him through Jesus, and it is for this
reason alone,

that I believe he is at peace and free from all of his suffering.

This is the reason we’re here! If you’re in Christ, I urge
you to tell others about the gift of eternal life. Don’t just show it, tell it.
You don’t want to feel the anguish I felt that night of knowing you had never
told the one you loved about the most precious gift we have. And if you’re not in Christ, I urge you to
repent and be reconciled to God. Not everyone gets to know that they are dying.
Not everyone gets phone calls like that, followed by time to understand and reconcile. Don’t
wait!

Because of Tyler’s profession of faith, I believe he’s in
heaven and that’s why I say, death didn’t win this battle, life did!

Rest in peace, Tyler.

I wanted to end the blog with some of the details of our final celebration of Tyler's life and a demonstration of the love that you all have poured out on Tyler and Michelle this past week.

So, sit back, grab a cup of tea and get a box of tissues ready...this is going to be a long, emotional post. In fact, I'll break it into 2 posts for you, since I have a lot to say.

As difficult as this week was, we were so blessed by many of you attending Tyler's services and offering your time, your hugs and your donations. Some of you even flew in from far away places to honor Tyler and be with your friends who were suffering, and we appreciate that more than you know.

Our family was so touched when Tyler's nurses and doctors came to pay their respects as well. This is more than a job to them, it is a calling, and they have touched our lives in ways we never thought possible. Even the therapy dogs that Tyler loved so much, came to the funeral home to say their goodbyes. It was heartbreaking and touching at the same time. These doctors touched Tyler's life so much, that Michelle decided to have Tyler buried in the LSU sweatshirt that Dr. Murphy had given him, to wear when he got better. Tyler never got the chance to put it on, but now he will wear it forever. We are more than grateful for UofM Mott's hospital, even though Tyler was still rooting for OSU in the big game. He was glad UofM got greedy and went for the 2 point conversion ;)

Some of you may not know, but Michelle's best friend Kelly, tragically lost her young daughter 7 years ago to an epileptic seizure. This is a bond that no 2 friends should have to share, but Kelly is 7 years ahead of Michelle on this painful journey and is by her side all the way. Tyler is buried next to Dakota now, so they can visit their children together. We can't say thank you enough for the love and support you've always shown Michelle, especially now, Kelly (and your family).

The funeral home was filled with hundreds of pictures of Tyler, much to our surprise. When we gathered on Saturday night to put them together, we weren't sure what we could even come up with, knowing that Tyler hated his picture taken. Once we all gathered, we were overwhelmed with what we had found. We even had to go out and purchase more poster boards to get them all out there. Thank you to all who contributed to the pictures and flowers that made the funeral home full of personal touches.

The funeral services on Wednesday were beautiful. Tammy helped to pick out some songs with Michelle and somehow they picked the most fitting songs. My friend Darla, opened the service with her beautiful voice, and amazing talent, singing "Blessings in Disguise" by Laura Story. The words cut deeply.

Then, Tyler's aunts and I shared some personal thoughts and memories of Tyler. Those I will share on the next post.

Pastor Kohler gave a compassionate message about how God is still good and still loving, despite these circumstances. He explained that the god that most bookstores sell is one that wants to make you happy, wants to give you things...and that is all washed away when something tragic like this occurs. He talked about what God's love is from 1 John 4:9-11 "By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." I'm paraphrasing here, but he talked about how we are sinners, God tells us not to lie, we lie. God tells us not to steal, we still. And disease and death is a result of that rebellion against God because he cursed the world for it. Yet, He made a way and He demonstrates His love for us in that even in our rebellion, He sent his only Son to be a substitution for us...to take the punishment and God's wrath, for our sin. If we repent and have faith in Christ, we can have Eternal life through His sacrifice and resurrection.

Darla then finished the service with a beautiful and powerful version of Amazing Grace. The family then said our final farewells to Tyler and a huge procession followed us to the grave site. There, we had more prayers and were reminded of the promise from Revelations 21 that awaits those who have faith in Jesus:

3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”
5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

What a promise! I believe Tyler is in Heaven with Jesus now, free of pain and suffering. Praise God!

I know I talk a lot about the women who surround this boy, but the men in his life served as his pallbearers - Josh, BJ, Chris, Rob, Dennis, Aaron, Jason and David. And one more woman to mention, Kelly's mom, Madeline, led the way as the honorary pallbearer. It was beautiful!
I have no words, only tears. I ask that you please pray for peace and comfort for the family. Please pray for Michelle, suffering from an unspeakable loss of her only child.

Once we have funeral arrangements, I will post them if you would like to come and pay your respects for a young man who became such an inspiration for his admirable fight against this awful disease. He was so courageous, fighting until the end. We will miss him immensely.

Blessings to you all,
JettieJettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-18166516563767756422013-11-27T11:37:00.001-05:002013-11-27T11:41:24.930-05:00Thanksgiving Tyler remains at UofM. They were really trying to get him home for Thanksgiving, but that isn't going to happen. The last couple of weeks have been extremely difficult. This disease is really trying to beat him. But Tyler isn't giving in. He's still up for the fight and giving it everything he has. I admire this kid so much. The hope he has that he is going to beat this, the will he has to keep going, it's astonishing to me!

I was up to see him Sunday and he's in a lot of pain still! It's heart wrenching to see. His shoulder and arm are in excruciating pain. He was at the max of all the pain drips they could give him, and still reporting a pain level of 10. They did a CT Scan and found lesions on his arm. They are assuming they are cancerous, but haven't done a biopsy. He did finally fall asleep while I was there that night, which was a nice relief and answer to my prayers. Monday, they put him back on the lidocain drip that was successful a few months back, in relieving his pain. Please pray for his continued comfort and peace, and relief from this pain.

Even though he suffers so much, I still thank God for giving us this time with Tyler. I have been seeing God's grace and kindness and mercy over Tyler (and our family) through this entire journey. I
believe it is a miracle that he is still with us. I believe in the power of prayer and I'm thankful for you all that have been praying for him for so long. As I have said many times before, we will
continue to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and praying without
ceasing for Tyler. Please continue to join us in that prayer!

Most of our family will be gathering at the hospital tomorrow for Thanksgiving. We wish you all an enjoyable time with your families this holiday season. And again, thank you for all you have done for us over this past year.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Jettie Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-29103965607664482492013-11-11T15:49:00.000-05:002013-11-11T15:49:20.352-05:00Needing prayers
Ty is still at UofM. He's having trouble with his stomach again. It is swelling and his drain tubes aren't working properly. They've put some new tubes in, but that hasn't helped. They did an x-ray last night, to see if anything out of the ordinary is going on, but it came back normal (for Tyler). He's mostly sleeping, but also throwing up and in a lot of pain. Michelle, Erin (his nurse) and the doctors are doing their best to figure out what is going on and get him more comfortable.

I saw him yesterday and it just broke my heart. The poor kid. He's suffering! More so than I've seen in some time. There are no words for it. Nothing you can say to make things better. All I could do was rub his frail hand on my way out and tell him I loved him.

Please pray for him. His mom and grandma are still there, sleeping in chairs by his side, night and day. Pray for them too.

Love,
JettieJettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-43208380931865630892013-11-04T09:47:00.002-05:002013-11-04T09:47:55.644-05:00Hospital again...Tyler gave us quite a scare last night. Michelle wasn't able to wake him up, although he was breathing fine. So, she had to call 911 and they came and took him to the nearest hospital. While there, they found that his blood sugar was down below 20. They were able to treat that and wake him up a bit, but then had him transferred to UofM, so he could be with his team of doctors that knows his case.As of this morning, he's awake but his sugar is still all over the place.

Please pray that his blood sugar will stabilize and they can get him back home again.

Thank you,
Team TylerJettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-1253183179478082452013-11-02T15:22:00.004-04:002013-11-03T07:15:15.075-05:00So so thankfulOnce again, Team Tyler thanks you for your continued prayers, devotion, love, care and generosity. If you are reading this blog, prayed for Tyler, sent a card, brought a meal or donated anything over the last year, we're grateful for you. There are no words that can properly express the amount of gratitude we have for all of you!

Wednesday's fundraiser was no exception. The turnout was, once again, overwhelming. I know I will leave names off, so this is by no means a complete list, but I would at least like to acknowledge many of you who devoted your time, energy and money to Tyler and Michelle.

ALL of the food was donated, which included pasta, sauce, salad, bread, meatballs, sausage, beverages and lots of desserts. Those were made by the kind people that are in connection with this family and companies and restaurants like National Coney Island, Andary's, Aldi's, Caramango, Tyson and Stan Ye.

There were lots of people that spent many hours helping to cook, set up, sell tickets, donate baskets, keep the food coming, etc. But, a special thanks to Tyler's Papa Bill and Grandma Didi, to my mom and dad (Cindy and Don), the staff at National Coney (Austin, Sandy, Kyle, Tiffany, Brook, and probably a couple more I'm leaving out) and to our close friends and family...Patty, Cheri, Tammy, Cindy Baca, Dayna, Josh, David and Mary, Aunt Juanita, Uncle Al, Dee Marie, John Tobin, Chrissy, Athena, Dawn, Ellen, Shorty, Cheryl and Terry (and again some I probably forgot to name).

In the pictures below, you'll also see everyone running around in their Team Tyler gear (donated by Jimmy Nelson) and sporting prayer bracelets for Tyler (donated by Michelle's close friend Kelly's mom).

I'm sure I left someone off the lists above, so again, I'm sorry if I did. We still appreciate you, I just don't have the best memory and didn't write names down.

Thank you again to all of those who attended and donated. We are so very grateful for each and every one of you.

Tyler took a break from treatments over the last couple of weeks because he had made it his goal to enjoy his 19th birthday (to the best of his ability) and to make it to the fundraiser. This strong guy accomplished both of those goals in the same week. We were more than thrilled to see him and Michelle at the fundraiser.

I do want to make one more very special HUGE thank you to a really brave young man, BJ. This is Tyler's best friend and probably the main reason that Tyler made it to the fundraiser. He really wanted to see his friend. Tyler came and stayed for over 2 hours. BJ came and sat by Tyler's side almost the entire time. I couldn't pass by the table without being overwhelmed with emotion. Sometimes, all it takes is a good friend to sit by your side, on your best of days and your worst. Thank you, BJ, for the friendship you have shown Tyler for most of his life, especially this last year. Everyone deserves a good friend like you!
I can't believe how fast it seems the year has gone by, but also what a long year it has been. Life is funny that way, I guess.

Tyler had a little family gathering today. He sat up in a chair for most of the time, enjoyed a little chicken, potatoes and cake...and even let people take pictures of him! So he had a good little bday party.

I put a pretty lengthy post out there, on this day, last year to tell you a bit about Tyler and this family that surrounds him. But wow, this year has taught me so much more than I could have ever imagined. First, I feel like I never really knew Tyler. I mean, I knew him...but I guess I didn't know what made up that boy we all loved so much. I've said it so many times over the last year, but man, I would have never guessed there was such a strong, brave, fighter under that shy exterior. Quite frankly, there have been many times over this last year that I didn't know if we would see this day, his 19th birthday. But through all the tests and trials, and pain and suffering, Tyler pulls through. Every time, he pulls through.

I know that this can't be by his strength alone. I'm thankful for this great cloud of witnesses that has surrounded us and lifted him up in prayer. And I'm very grateful to my Heavenly Father for answering those prayers. I'm also thankful for his support team (his mom and the rest of "Team Tyler"), as well as amazing nurses and doctors.

And this, this is the biggest thing I've learned this year. I've learned what Moses meant in Psalm 90 when he asked God to teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. I always thought this was a strange prayer. Why would we need to be taught to number our days? Then, tragedy struck and suddenly we were counting minutes and hours and soon days, for Tyler. When life becomes so precious, it begins to put everything in perspective. You forgive more easily, you love more deeply, you become more urgent with what is important. I guess Tim McGraw wasn't the first to sing about it ;)

I thank God for continuing to give Tyler his "tomorrows". I'll continue to pray for more of those, along with his healing, comfort and peace. I'm thankful for Tyler and the blessing he has been to this family for 19 years.

Never ever give up, buddy! Stay strong!

------------------------------------------------

As for me, I pray the Lord would continue to teach me to number my days.
When I saw him, yesterday afternoon, he had just taken some pain meds and gone to sleep. He woke up abruptly, though, and started getting pretty sick. I left so Michelle and Grandma Didi could take care of him. He then started spiking a high fever that wouldn't break. So, the doctors wanted him to come and get checked out. They ended up admitting him again last night.

He's pretty mad about having to be there for "just a fever", he said. Praying that it will break and they can get him back home again.

Thank you again for your continued prayers and concerns for Tyler. Watching him suffer this way for the past year has been unbearable at times. We're thankful that you all are continuing to lift him and our family up in prayers. May the God of peace and comfort continue to surround Tyler and this family on this road of suffering. God bless!Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-9731948988871349682013-10-17T11:28:00.000-04:002013-10-17T11:33:11.528-04:00Home Again!Tyler was finally able to come home earlier this week!! He is still mostly sleeping these days. Michelle has now kicked in to full-time nurse mode. Please keep them in your prayers!Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-25049900912320830702013-10-14T10:17:00.001-04:002013-10-14T11:40:06.657-04:00Update and Fundraiser InfoTyler continues to battle on. He has his bad days and his okay days. For the most part, they have his pain under control. He's on a LOT of medication to make that happen. They are continuing to experiment with different chemos, but still, none have caused the tumor to shrink. They are still trying to get him home. Every week, they set a new day of that week as their goal. But, Tyler is just too sick to be released at this point. Sometimes it's his blood counts, sometimes the pain and sometimes it's a fever. Poor kid has a lot going on.

If you've been keeping up with his story, you know he has been in the hospital for over a year now. He did have a brief 10 day release to go home in July, but had to come back due to complications. Tyler will be 19 on October 28th. He has spent his entire 18th year of life in a hospital bed. He's such a brave kid, who is full of silent endurance. I've rarely heard him complain and never once has he wanted to give up this fight. No matter what the doctors tell him about this outcome, no matter how much pain he suffers from, he still keeps going. He's brave.

His mom is brave too. Always by his side, encouraging him not to give up. Sacrificing everything to be by her son night and day. She's sick of the hospital. She wants to be home, but still she waits by his side. She stays sleeping in a chair next to him, each night.

The family has decided to put another spaghetti dinner together for Ty and Michelle. We would love to have you join us for an evening of fun and dinner. Here are the details:
They have been trying to get him home, but he's been needing platelets and blood, which was preventing him from going home. Now, the pain is back. Can you please pray for Tyler's pain to decrease? Today they are thinking that it might be kidney stones with where the pain is and how acutely it is coming. Please pray for comfort for him. He is back on the pain pump, which is helping a little, but not all the way so they are increasing the dose. Pray that the stones will go away and he can get some relief.

Don't forget to pray for his mama too.

Thanks again!
Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-61786060624112650132013-09-16T09:28:00.000-04:002013-09-16T10:13:43.554-04:00No big changes to reportSorry for the lack of updates over the last couple of weeks. Not much has changed for Tyler. His pain levels are remaining low, around a 3. He's had some nausea and random fevers here and there. They did a CT Scan last week and there were no changes to report. They have decided to switch up his chemo again. He started that later last week, and so far, nothing significant to report on that either.

The doctors are working towards getting Tyler home. It looks like he may need to get his kidney stints replaced, but he has to be fever free for 48 hours to do that. So, they are hoping to do that sometime this week. Tyler has ordered up some new video games that he is itching to get home and play. His main doctor had to remind the residents last week that "This is not Tyler's home!", that they need to be focusing on plans that get him home. Michelle was happy to hear that they are seeing things her way on that, finally.

Thank you for your continued care and prayers. As always, we appreciate you very much.
He's still experiencing a lot of pain. They have been playing with the pain medications to get him comfortable. He is also still undergoing chemo treatments on Tuesdays. What a trooper, this kid! I'm truly astounded by his tenacity and endurance.

Thursday, they will be sending him to the ICU to try a new pain medication, a cousin of the lidacain. They have to administer it in the ICU because it can cause heart issues. This will allow them to closely monitor him again. They are hoping to get him on something that will allow him to go home.

As always, we appreciate your prayers and concern for Tyler and our family. Have a blessed day!Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-69947277569533981922013-08-20T16:45:00.001-04:002013-08-20T16:45:16.984-04:00Back on the dripTyler was put back on the pain drip the other day and it has brought his pain back down to the 0-1 levels! He is also back on the 7th floor with his favorite nursing staff, namely Pam and Erin. The plan is to keep him on this medication for as long as his body can tolerate it. Thank you for your continued prayers!
The pain is back!Unfortunately, Tyler's pain did not stay down. It shot back up to a 10 by yesterday afternoon. His stomach was swelling as well. They took some x-rays and found that he has air in his bowels again. It's where it is supposed to be, but just too much of it, which is causing excruciating pain. They put a tube through his nose, to the bowel, to try and alleviate some of the air. They also gave him some medicine that calmed him and allowed him to rest. He's sleeping this morning, which is a good thing.

Thank you for your continued prayers for his healing and comfort. Please also pray for Michelle and family, as it is so very difficult to watch him when he's in this kind of pain and there's nothing you can do to help.

As a follower of Christ Jesus, I found this blog post, at Desiring God, very encouraging in light of the suffering we've been walking through over the last 10 or so months. Take a few minutes to read it: Jesus Has Overcome this World.

I will continue to rest in Him!

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the
world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the
world. (John 16:33)
The awesome news is that his pain levels were down to 0 while on the drip! Praise God!!

The real test will be to see if they will remain low after the drip is turned off. They took him off the drip early this morning and so far, he's still maintaining a pretty low pain level...saying he's at a 1 right now.

Please pray that his pain stays controlled and low! Thank you for your prayers. Praying for continued comfort for Tyler.

Much love to you all! Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-2562731827146878312013-08-12T09:28:00.001-04:002013-08-12T09:28:23.624-04:00Back in the ICUTyler's pain has not been able to be controlled. He is miserable and uncomfortable. So, they have decided to try a lidocaine drip on him. Because this method of giving this drug has bad side effects on the organs, they have to regulate him more closely, which means he has to go to the ICU during the administration of it.

He went in the ICU last night and they were planning on starting it then. We're hoping it will only be a few days in the ICU and then he can move back to his room on the cancer floor.

Thank you for your continued prayers for comfort for Tyler and the family.
He had air in his bowels again, which looks to be getting better. But now he has "free air" in his abdomen and they are trying to figure out where that is coming from. He's getting really uncomfortable again. Please pray they can find the source and "fix" it, and get him comfortable again. Jettiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05226651060710501441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7597013881918170059.post-68227682722099123682013-07-31T16:41:00.000-04:002013-07-31T22:03:31.101-04:00A little conversation timeTyler is still in the hospital. He does have an infection, for which he's receiving antibiotics. He hasn't run a fever since Sunday night, though. Thank you for those prayers!! They are mostly concerned about his pain levels right now, and trying to get that under control.

When I was there on Monday night, he was having a pretty good night. His pain was "sustainable", he said. It makes a world of difference when they have it under control. I had seen him the week prior and he was in excruciating pain...blotchy skin, gritting his teeth, hiding his face under a sheet, moving constantly to try and get comfortable. That will cause anyone to cry...not just me, being the sap that I am.

Anyhow, I was pleasantly surprised at how conversational he was while I was there. He wanted to let me know that he had broken a record. I asked which one and he said, "the highest dose of methedone that they have ever given a patient (adult or kid)". Yikes! I'm not sure that's a record worth breaking!! Poor kid! He continued to talk for the couple of hours I was there. When I first offered dinner, he said no, like usual. Until he smelled it. Then he said, "It smells like italian". I said it was and he asked what I brought. I told him "spaghetti with meatballs and lasagna". He replied, "I have a sweet spot for lasagna. Save me a bite. I know I'll have to fight my mom for it!". She saved him some, of course, and he ate it. :) He also carried on with his nurse, Erin, about how he used to love spaghetti and meatballs as a kid. And that he would only go to restaurants that had that. He looked at me and asked if I remembered. I smiled and said I did. I told him I mostly remembered how much he loved chicken fingers when he was a kid. He then went on to tell Erin about a phase of loving only cheese sticks, but that he wouldn't touch them now. Then he started telling stories of how his papa was always trying to get him to try gross things...like deer and liver. I told him how my Aaron was always sneaking venison into our food at home too, and we laughed. He talked about how his papa will eat absolutely anything! He's right about that one too! So I just sat there smiling as he told all of these little stories. We talked about how much we loved being only children because we got super spoiled, and still are! He went on and on about how his grandma bought him so much stuff, he could barely fit it in the car to take it home, at Christmas. He talked about how he figured out Santa wasn't real when he heard his mom going up and down the stairs at Christmas one year. And how, after that, he would peak at his hidden gifts, even though his mom wrapped them as soon as she bought them. And now, he only got a few gifts because they were more expensive ones...but he misses the days of opening tons and tons of gifts.
I don't remember what all we talked about, but those few things stick out. Before I left that night, I prayed with him. Then, like I do every time, I told him I love him. This time, I got a vocal "I love you too, Aunt Jettie" back. Sometimes he's sleeping or in too much pain for that. That was the" icing on the cake" for my visit!

I'm not sure why I'm sharing details of this somewhat insignificant conversation with you. I was just so relieved to see him comfortable and talking. For those that know him, I hope you can picture his little witty ways of conversing. And remember those times when he was a kid and would go on rounds with his papa and get chicken fingers at the coney, for breakfast :) For those that don't, maybe it's a chance to get to know him a bit more. Just a regular kid, but one we love a whole heckuva lot!

At any rate, he's in enough pain today that they aren't sending him home. Michelle texted me and said "he's miserable", which makes my head go to pictures of the previous week I visited. So please, pray that he'll be comfortable and that the doctors will be able to control his pain. Pray for strength for Michelle and his grandma Didi who are by his side, night and day.
Much love to you all! Hug your loved ones today...have an "insignificant" conversation with them. It might make your day, or theirs!
They replaced the tube on Sunday, but he had a fever and his white blood counts were up, so they are keeping him. He may have an infection in his PICC line. He's getting blood and platelet transfusions and hoping to go home over the next couple of days. He has to be fever free for 48 hours before getting sent home. They are also working on managing his pain while he is there. Please keep him in your prayers. Since coming home, the insurance company now has to approve each medication and medical equipment. Some of these are being denied or delayed, so most of Michelle's day is spent on the phone fighting with insurance companies to get approvals. When she's not doing that, she is administering all of Tyler's medications, which is an around the clock job. It is very stressful, so please pray for continued strength for Michelle.
They have a huge support team in the family, as you already know. The family is helping to pick up prescriptions, stop in for visits, bring meals, stay the night with them for an extra set of hands, etc. Please also pray for them that they would have renewed strength and not grow weary in doing good for their loved ones.
Tyler has been having a lot of pain in his shoulder, back and legs. They weren't able to get his air mattress bed until just the other night. Hopefully that, as well as an increase in his methadone, will get him much more comfortable. Please pray for Tyler's pain to decrease and that he would be able to rest and be comfortable.

They are still traveling to Ann Arbor once a week for chemo. The comfort care team there has made sure to reserve Tyler a bed while he undergoes his chemo treatments, which is so helpful because Tyler is in a lot of pain if he sits up for more than an hour in his chair. While some of the administration at a huge hospital like that is frustrating, it's nice to see the small things they do to put the patient first.

When Tyler isn't in too much pain, he has been up for taking little wheelchair rides, with family, around his neighborhood. I love to hear when he's having a better day and able to get out and enjoy a bit of sunshine and fresh air.

We appreciate your continued support, care and prayers.
